"Iaido (pronounced e-eye-do) is a traditional Japanese martial art which focuses upon the Katana - or Samurai sword. Iaido or Iaijutsu, as it was originally known - evolved from the art of fencing, then known as Kenjutsu. In Kenjutsu, all techniques start with the sword already drawn; in Iaijutsu the sword is still in the scabbard. iaido developed in the fifteenth century, was intended to counter surprise sword attacks and, as such, was a necessary skill for the Samurai. As peace became the norm, however, Iaido began to evolve to a higher level. Today, the purpose of Iaido is purely spiritual. Iaido is practised to develop awareness, calmness, centeredness, presence of mind and a unity between physical and spiritual strength. This is achieved through long hours of practice perfecting the various sword forms and a dedication to the study of Iaido." ~ quoted from UBC Iaido Club (under the Canadian Iaido Association)
